Designed for High Schoolers, this curriculum provides students with what they need to know about Health or Nutrition to make the best choices for themselves as they become young adults. This holistic approach explores physical, nutritional, emotional, social, mental, and spiritual concepts. In conversational style, this book will guide students through key learning strategies, such as learning by thinking critically, identifying important parts of the information presented, taking quality notes, and completing projects.
Some Topics Discussed: Why does health matter? Physical influences on thoughts and feelings, Mental and Emotional Stability, Interpersonal Harmony, Senses, Nourishment and Hydration, Food Science: Macronutrients and Micronutrients, Body systems and structure, Physical Fitness, Infection and Immunity, Spiritual Health, Sexual Reproduction.
Some hands-on projects will be done in class, but most need to be done at home. Here are some examples: Nature vs Nurture, Personal Temperament, Good decision-making skills, Boundary setting, Analyzing food intake and activity levels, Creating good hygiene habits, Keeping a good sleep record, and more…
Towards the end of the 2nd semester, we are offering 2 optional projects:
Babycare - Using realistic babies, students will learn how to care for a baby over 2 to 3 days/nights. Instructions, worksheets, and quizzes/tests will be included. (An additional fee will be due at that time with an amount to be determined based on the number of students participating at that time.)*Speak to De’Ette Shattuck to discuss other options for this project. **Payment options, including charter, can be discussed at that time.
Certification course for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. This will be a blended learning project which will require a portion to be completed online with practical hands-on skills sessions during class time. (An additional fee will be due at that time, to be determined based on current certification pricing at that time.) **Charter Funds will be accepted.
Students who do not opt into one or both of the projects should still attend class and observe, take notes, and possibly participate in class discussions. One great thing about learning in small class sizes is that students can learn from their peers even if they have not been a part of the project.
Parental Note: This is a full health textbook. Some students may not be mature enough to discuss some of the topics. The reproductive systems are covered in detail, including accurate, yet respectful, illustrations and descriptions. The text respectfully discusses the act of marriage, sexual misconduct, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, chapters discuss alcohol and drug abuse, depression, pornography, and other topics that also require maturity. Please use your knowledge of your students to decide if this course is appropriate for their maturity levels.
